Elon’s got something wrong
As a manager and leader, I understand the importance of clear communication and transparency with my team and stakeholders. And while I admire the accomplishments and vision of Elon Musk, I also believe that his management style on Twitter has some significant flaws and errors that can be damaging to his team and his organization.
One of the errors of Elon Musk’s management style on Twitter is his tendency to make public statements without consulting or informing his team. For example, in 2018, Musk tweeted that he was considering taking Tesla private, and that he had secured funding for the deal. This tweet caused significant confusion and uncertainty among Tesla employees and investors, and it was later revealed that the funding was not secured and the deal was not going forward.
Another error of Elon Musk’s management style on Twitter is his tendency to use the platform to make personal attacks on critics and detractors. For example, in 2018, Musk attacked a British cave diver who had been involved in the rescue of a youth soccer team in Thailand, calling him a “pedo guy” on Twitter. This personal attack was widely criticized, and it caused significant damage to Musk’s reputation and the reputation of Tesla.
Finally, Elon Musk’s management style on Twitter is also characterized by his use of the platform to make provocative and controversial statements. For example, in 2018, Musk tweeted that he would “whoop” the artificial intelligence (AI) system AlphaGo in a game of Go. This tweet was seen as arrogant and reckless, and it sparked concerns about Musk’s understanding of the capabilities and limitations of AI.
